Wet Needling vs. Dry Needling vs. Trigger Point Injections: A Patient Guide to the Key Differences
Read the article
Trigger points, the tight knots of muscle that refer pain across your back, neck, and shoulders, respond to more than one kind of treatment. Thrive is the rare Long Island practice with the full toolkit under one roof: physician-delivered trigger point injections, dry needling by licensed acupuncturists, and hands-on manual therapy. We find what is actually driving your pain, then pick the tool that fits. We accept most major insurance plans and verify your benefits before your first visit.

Are you dealing with muscle pain, knots, or tightness that will not let up? That pain often comes from trigger points, which are hyperirritable spots in a muscle that hurt on their own and can refer pain somewhere else. At Thrive Health of Long Island, our trigger point therapy goes after the source of that muscle pain so you can move comfortably again.
Trigger point therapy is a highly effective treatment focused on identifying and releasing these tight knots in your muscles. These trigger points can cause localized pain, as well as “referred pain” in other areas of your body. Our skilled practitioners use a variety of techniques to release these points, relax the muscles, and alleviate your pain.
For stubborn or deeply guarded trigger points, our physicians can inject a small amount of local anesthetic directly into the knot, often with ultrasound guidance to place it precisely. The muscle releases immediately, which breaks the pain cycle long enough for hands-on work and movement to hold the gains. Injections are physician-delivered, covered by most major plans, and available at all four offices.
If you already know you want the needle-only approach, our licensed acupuncturists perform dry needling as well. No injection, no medication, same focus on releasing the trigger point.
01
We press, move, and test rather than just talk. Trigger points announce themselves under a trained hand, and the exam tells us whether the knot is your primary problem or a symptom of something else, like joint dysfunction or nerve irritation.
02
You get hands-on treatment at that first visit, not just an assessment.
03
Releasing the point usually changes something before you leave the table: more range, less of the referred ache. Which tool we used, injection, needle, or hands, depends on what the exam showed, not a one-size protocol.
04
You leave knowing what the trigger points were doing, which treatment your plan is built around, and how many visits it should realistically take to keep them from coming back.

We handle the billing. Most people pay a co-insurance amount at the visit and nothing else.
Not every plan covers every service, and coverage depends on medical necessity. A small number of plans place us outside their network. We will tell you if yours is one of them, and we still file the claim for you.

It is a tight, tender spot inside a muscle. When your provider presses on it, it often reproduces the pain you came in for, and sometimes sends that pain somewhere else, such as from the shoulder up into the head.
There is usually a short, achy pressure while the spot lets go, then the muscle softens. Most people call it uncomfortable but easy to sit through. Say something at any point and your provider will ease off.
That depends on how long the pain has been around and what keeps feeding it. Many people notice a change within two or three visits. You will get a rough plan after the first exam, and we adjust it as we go.
Mild soreness for a day or two is common, a lot like how you feel after a hard workout. Water, gentle movement, and a little heat usually settle it down.

Most people do. We may ask you to keep hard training light for a day so the muscle has a chance to settle.
