Insomnia Treatment on Long Island

Tired all day, wide awake at night, and running out of things to try. Acupuncture will not be the whole answer and we will tell you what is, but a lot of people find it takes the edge off while the rest of the plan does its work.

Does this sound like you?

  • It takes you more than half an hour to fall asleep most nights
  • You wake at two or three and cannot get back down
  • You wake far earlier than you meant to
  • Tired all day, but you cannot nap either
  • You have started dreading bedtime
  • It has been going on three months or longer

If you recognized yourself in more than one of those, that is enough to book. You do not need a diagnosis to come in, and you do not need a referral to start.

How we treat insomnia

This one sits with our acupuncture team. Your plan is built by a licensed acupuncturist, and we bring in the rest of the practice only if you need it.

Acupuncture

Most people find the sessions themselves calming, and report sleeping better afterwards. Ear points are often part of it.

Acupressure

Point work with no needles, if that is the part putting you off. We can teach you two or three points to use at home when you are lying awake.

What happens when you come in

1

We work out the cause

A full history and a hands-on exam. We look at how you move, not only where it hurts, so the plan targets the thing driving the pain.

2

Treatment starts the same day

You are treated on the first visit in most cases. No waiting for a second appointment to begin.

3

We reassess as you go

We check progress at set points and adjust. If something is not working we change it or tell you honestly that we are not the right fit.

Your plan probably covers this

We accept The Empire Plan/NYSHIP, BlueCross BlueShield, Aetna, Cigna, Medicare and UnitedHealthcare, and other plans that have out-of-network coverage. We check your benefits before your first visit and tell you what you will owe, so nothing lands on you at the front desk.

We handle the billing. In most cases you pay a co-insurance amount at the visit and we take it from there.

Not every plan covers every service, and coverage depends on medical necessity. A few plans place us outside their network. When that happens we still file the claim for you and give you the cost in writing before you book.

What the research says

The treatment with the strongest evidence for long-running insomnia is a short talk-based program called CBT-I, and we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise. Acupuncture has been studied alongside it. Reviews find people rate their sleep quality better and get back to sleep faster, though total hours slept has not clearly changed and the trials are small. We treat it as real support rather than the main event.

Loud snoring, gasping in the night, morning headaches or heavy daytime sleepiness point towards sleep apnea, which needs a sleep study rather than acupuncture. Tell your doctor about insomnia that arrives with low mood, unexplained weight loss or night sweats. Never stop a prescribed sleep medication without the prescriber.

Questions people ask us

What is CBT-I and why do you keep mentioning it?

It is a short structured program that retrains how you sleep, and it is the one insomnia treatment with strong evidence behind it. We mention it because leaving it out would be the dishonest part. Ask us and we will point you towards it.

Will acupuncture get me off sleeping pills?

That is between you and whoever prescribed them, and we will not make that call. What we can do is work alongside whatever your prescriber decides.

How many sessions before I notice anything?

Most people have a sense inside four to six visits. If nothing has shifted by then we will say so rather than keep booking you.

Does it just relax me for an hour?

Partly, and that is not nothing when you have not slept properly in months. The studies suggest the effect outlasts the session, but they measure how people rate their sleep rather than hours on a monitor.

Is it covered by insurance?

Acupuncture coverage varies a lot by plan. Send us your card and we will check before you come in.

Chris (massage therapist) and Stacy (acupuncturist) are amazingly skilled practitioners and genuinely just lovely, kind people. I’m currently pregnant and Chris has gone above and beyond be able to continue massaging me safely throughout my pregnancy. Stacy has been so sweet and invested in my journey as well, it really makes this place special. I think check-in has taken a hit since losing Sabrina, she was great. But otherwise this place is awesome.

I am a person that has many physical issues. I found Thrive of Smithtown, on an post that Doreen had put up on Facebook. I figured I would give this physical therapy office a shot. All the folks at this office are professionals and have helped me with all my medical issues. You have to put the time in to feel the results. I like the hands on approach at this PT office. The other PT offices I have used, put some heat and stim on the area of concern, then send you to the equipment and see ya later. If you are looking for a change or if you think you should have better results. Check them out!
