Treated at all four Suffolk County offices

Chronic Low Back Pain Treatment on Long Island

Back pain for three months or longer needs a different plan than a fresh strain. We treat it at four Suffolk County offices using physical therapy, acupuncture, dry needling, and medical massage, usually in combination.

Does this sound like you?

  • The pain has been there three months or more
  • Sitting, driving, or standing too long makes it worse
  • Stiff in the morning, looser once you get moving
  • It sometimes runs into your buttock or down a leg
  • Anti-inflammatories take the edge off, then it comes back
  • You have already tried rest, stretching, or a previous course of treatment

If you recognized yourself in more than one of those, that is enough to book. You do not need a diagnosis to come in, and you do not need a referral to start.

How we treat chronic low back pain

Most people do best on a combination. Your first visit sorts out which of these you actually need, and in what order.

Physical Therapy

Rebuilds what your back can handle, so a long drive or a full workday stops costing you the evening. This is usually the spine of the plan.

Acupuncture

When pain is the thing stopping you doing the rehab, this is what we reach for. Clinical guidelines list it as a first-line option for back pain like yours.

Dry Needling

For the tight bands around your spine and hip that keep locking up. A subset of acupuncture, and in New York only licensed acupuncturists can perform it, so ours do.

Medical Massage

Releases the muscles that have spent months guarding, which is often what makes the movement work bearable in the first place.

What happens when you come in

1

We work out the cause

A full history and a hands-on exam. We look at how you move, not only where it hurts, so the plan targets the thing driving the pain.

2

Treatment starts the same day

You are treated on the first visit in most cases. No waiting for a second appointment to begin.

3

We reassess as you go

We check progress at set points and adjust. If something is not working we change it or tell you honestly that we are not the right fit.

Your plan probably covers this

We accept The Empire Plan/NYSHIP, BlueCross BlueShield, Aetna, Cigna, Medicare and UnitedHealthcare, and other plans that have out-of-network coverage. We check your benefits before your first visit and tell you what you will owe, so nothing lands on you at the front desk.

We handle the billing. In most cases you pay a co-insurance amount at the visit and we take it from there.

Not every plan covers every service, and coverage depends on medical necessity. A few plans place us outside their network. When that happens we still file the claim for you and give you the cost in writing before you book.

What the research says

Here is the honest answer. Clinical guidelines from the American College of Physicians list acupuncture among the first treatments to try for chronic low back pain, ahead of medication. The research shows moderate pain improvement for up to three months, and it has not been shown to improve how well you move. That is exactly why we pair it with physical therapy rather than relying on it alone, and why we reassess after two or three visits instead of assuming.

New loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or saddle area, or leg weakness that is getting worse needs emergency care the same day, not an appointment. Back pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, or a history of cancer should be seen by a physician first.

Questions people ask us

How much will this cost me?

With most plans you pay your co-insurance, not the full fee. We check your exact benefits before your first visit and tell you the number up front, so you are not guessing.

Do I need a referral or an MRI first?

No. In New York you can start physical therapy without a referral for up to 30 days or 10 visits, whichever comes first. Medicare, no-fault, and workers compensation do need one up front. You do not need imaging to be seen.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on how long you have had it and what the exam shows. Most plans start at one to two visits a week, and we reassess after two or three.

My scan showed a disc bulge. Does that change anything?

Often less than people expect. Disc changes turn up in plenty of people with no pain at all, so a bulge does not automatically explain your symptoms.

Does the needling hurt?

Most patients feel a brief twitch or ache when the needle reaches the tight spot, then a release. The needles are far thinner than the ones used for blood draws.

How soon can I get in?

Usually the same week, often within a couple of days depending on the office.

Chris (massage therapist) and Stacy (acupuncturist) are amazingly skilled practitioners and genuinely just lovely, kind people. I’m currently pregnant and Chris has gone above and beyond be able to continue massaging me safely throughout my pregnancy. Stacy has been so sweet and invested in my journey as well, it really makes this place special. I think check-in has taken a hit since losing Sabrina, she was great. But otherwise this place is awesome.

I am a person that has many physical issues. I found Thrive of Smithtown, on an post that Doreen had put up on Facebook. I figured I would give this physical therapy office a shot. All the folks at this office are professionals and have helped me with all my medical issues. You have to put the time in to feel the results. I like the hands on approach at this PT office. The other PT offices I have used, put some heat and stim on the area of concern, then send you to the equipment and see ya later. If you are looking for a change or if you think you should have better results. Check them out!
